Rockband 2, the newest party game on the block has been released! But does it measure up to its predecessor?
The game, developed by Harmonix, is the latest addition to the growing genre of music simulation games, has recently been released for the XBOX 360 (soon to be released on the Playstation 2 & 3 and Wii).
Anything new to Rockband 2?
Harmonix has not altered the basic game from the original Rockband, but they have added several new features and songs in an attempt to provide a new gaming experience for veteran Rockband players.
The biggest draw to the sequel is the new song list. Players are greeted with a new 84-song playlist to unlock and play, as well as download. Harmonix has also given the option to import songs from the previous game if they own it. By simply inserting the original game, players can choose the 'Export Songs' option from the main menu. Viola! Players can now play original Rockband titles in Rockband 2.
The changes that Rockband 2 brings to the gameplay is not necessarily ground-breaking, but it is modified from the original game.
The 'No Fail' mode is a new addition to the game, allowing a song to be played without the threat of failing. Even though the mode is only available in Quickplay (so you can't progress in the actual game in the mode), it still provides a nice respite for those wishing to play more casually, such as in a party setting or those with small children.
Rockband 2 also brings changes to the Tour mode, most notably that any number of players can start a band and begin touring. The game, unlike its predecessor, require a band leader, allowing players to switch instruments throughout the tour.
Basically, Rockband 2 is just a continuation of the first game. It doesn't seek to break any new ground or upset any conventions, but simply expands on an already tested game. Players who enjoyed the first will find the sequel to be as fun, if not more. Slight changes, like the addition and modification of game modes, the increased difficulty of instruments and the new songs to play will have players finding it a worthwhile purchase.
