Even if you don?t like work you will probably end up spending a minimum of a third of your life in your office. This means that you spend a lot of time in your office and so it should look at least half decent! Offices should match the personality of the person. It?s actually fairly easy to do this by yourself so you don?t require and professional assistance. If however you do need professional help then there are some great ones to choose from.
Rules
Before you start deciding what to do with your office you should spend some time thinking about the rules. If you work for yourself then these will be something that you can make up by yourself, but if you work for someone else then you will need to consult with your employer.
Some employers may be unwilling to let you do certain things like painting the walls, they may only let you place a photo or two on your desk. Some employers will however let you hang paintings, move furniture and paint the walls. You need to understand the rules as breaking them could damage your working relationship, it?s not worthwhile breaking the rules for such a small thing.
Layout
After you?ve thought about the rules you are then free to create a layout for your office design. You need to spend quite a long time deciding on the layout as this can change the look and feel of the office, and also make the space more or less productive.
Careful consideration should be taken when deciding where to put the computer screen, as glare could be an issue. You might also want to consider putting the desk up against a wall to hide cables. When locating any electrical appliances make sure that the cables will not be trailing across the floor so that tripping hazards can be minimized.
Ideally you should design the workspace so that there is a flat desk surface and a computer area available so that you can not only work on the computer but you also have space to sign paperwork and write notes. The furniture also needs to be placed so that it?s easy to talk to people that come into your office without having to strain and crook your neck. To make this easier make sure you keep all filing cabinets well out of the way of where people will sit.
Time to Decorate
After all of that it?s then time to actually start decorating your office. You can make the space more interesting by adding some nice curtains in decorative colors. You might also consider adding a vase of flowers to make the space look fresh.
It?s a good idea to choose a single unifying color which can be used in the office to tie everything together. Also remember that this is primarily a working environment, stay away from animal prints or anything that may seem unprofessional. Of course it does depend what industry you are in. For professional designs choose solid colors.
Clutter will also make any office look unprofessional, you need to install plenty of storage to keep clutter to an absolute minimum. Some clutter is to be expected, just keep it under control!
